The Lagos Fanti Carnival is back with a bigger and more ambitious edition this year. The event is organised by the Brazilian Descendants Association in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. It will take place on Monday, April 6, at Tafawa Balewa Square and is themed “A Homecoming of Heritage.”
This year’s carnival is expected to attract more than 25,000 attendees and over 80,000 viewers online. The 2026 edition follows the 2025 revival, which drew about 5,000 participants after years of decline. Details of the revival’s funding and organisation were not disclosed, raising questions about how the carnival will sustain its current expansion.
The programme goes beyond traditional street processions to include a heritage exhibition, live performances, and an Afro-Brazilian Economic Summit. These additions aim to promote heritage tourism and highlight opportunities in cultural industries and investment across Lagos.

The carnival traces its roots to 19th-century Afro-Brazilian returnees known as the Aguda. Communities such as Lafiaji, Isale-Eko, Olowogbowo, and Campos continue to lead processions and preserve traditions. The 2026 edition will be a key test of whether cultural heritage can support economic growth while benefiting the communities that have maintained it for generations.
