The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has presented a framework for the establishment of state police to the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, received the document through a representative of the Nigeria Police Force. The framework was submitted by Olu Ogunsakin, who led the police committee set up to develop the proposal.
The document outlines recommendations on the structure, governance and coordination of both federal and state police systems. It is based on consultations and assessments of the legal, administrative and operational implications of creating state police in Nigeria.

The Senate committee says the proposal will be reviewed alongside other submissions as part of the constitutional amendment process. The move is in line with efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen security across the country.
