Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has passed a controversial law mandating the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis in “terror” offences, in a vote held on Monday.
The bill was approved by 62 lawmakers in the 120-seat parliament, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with 48 voting against it and one abstention, and is due to take effect within 30 days.
The legislation applies to Palestinians tried in Israeli military courts in the occupied West Bank, with critics noting it does not extend the same penalty to Jewish Israelis convicted of killing Palestinians.

The Palestinian Authority and several rights groups, as well as foreign ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, have condemned the law, describing it as discriminatory and a breach of international law.
