2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival Showcases Afro-Brazilian Heritage in Grand Style

The 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival has taken place at Tafawa Balewa Square, attracting top dignitaries including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Olusegun Hamzat and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, alongside cultural troupes and tourists. The event delivered a vibrant display of Afro-Brazilian history and identity, reinforcing its place as a major cultural attraction in Lagos.

This year’s theme, A Homecoming of Heritage, highlighted historic communities on Lagos Island such as Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo and Isale-Eko. The procession featured colourful costumes, rhythmic drumming and energetic performances, transforming the city centre into a lively celebration of culture and tradition.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, Advisory Board member of the Lagos African Festival, Aduke Gomez, said the carnival dates back to 1895 when Afro-Brazilian returnees began reenacting their heritage after arriving in Lagos in the 1830s. She noted that the celebration remains important in preserving the memory of those who were enslaved and later returned, while also contributing to economic growth.

The carnival has grown into a platform for cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Nigeria and Brazil through tourism and the creative industry. Organisers say the event continues to honour the past while creating opportunities for future collaboration, as it remains a strong expression of identity and unity in modern Lagos.
