NNPC Begins Export of New Cawthorne Crude Grade

NNPC Restores Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline After Explosion

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has commenced the export of a new crude oil grade known as Cawthorne as part of efforts to boost production and expand Nigeria’s presence in the global energy market. Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Limited, Andy Odeh, confirmed that the maiden cargo was shipped on April 5 aboard the MT Eburones vessel to the Netherlands.

According to Andy Odeh, the 950,000-barrel cargo was loaded from the Cawthorne floating storage and offloading vessel located offshore Bonny in Rivers State. He explained that the facility is expected to improve crude evacuation from Oil Mining Lease 18 and enhance export efficiency.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bayo Ojulari, described the new crude as a light sweet grade with strong demand in international markets due to its high petrol and diesel yield. He said the development aligns with the company’s strategy to optimise production, diversify export streams and strengthen competitiveness, adding that it builds on recent crude grades such as Nembe and Utapate.

Bayo Ojulari also linked the milestone to ongoing policy reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and collaboration with regulators, including the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. He noted that the initiative supports the federal government’s target of increasing crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day by the year 2030 while positioning Nigeria as a reliable global energy supplier.
