Djibouti holds presidential election as Guelleh seeks sixth term

Voters in Djibouti are casting ballots in a presidential election in which long-time leader Ismail Omar Guelleh is seeking a sixth term in office.

The 78-year-old incumbent is facing Mohamed Farah Samatar of the Unified Democratic Centre in a race involving just two candidates. Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, is widely expected to extend his 27-year rule.

Lawmakers had removed presidential age limits last year, clearing the way for his re-election bid, while opposition groups have accused authorities of political repression, allegations the government denies.

Polling is ongoing across the country, with provisional results expected within hours after voting closes, according to electoral officials.
