Save the Children says at least three babies are being born every minute in Sudan into conditions it describes as dangerous and deprived due to the ongoing war. The charity says this amounts to about 5,000 births a day since fighting began in April 2023.
The organisation says around 5.6 million children have been born during the conflict, as violence, displacement and hunger continue to affect millions of families across the country. It adds that many births are taking place in overcrowded shelters, damaged hospitals or while families are on the move.
The war between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 12 million, according to United Nations estimates. Aid groups say attacks on health facilities have severely weakened maternal and child healthcare services.

Save the Children warns that maternal deaths have risen in recent years, while up to 80 percent of health facilities in conflict areas are no longer functioning, leaving millions without access to essential care.
