FEC Approves Nearly $3 Billion For Three Major Rail Projects

The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts worth $2.99 billion for three major rail projects in Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states. Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and coordinating Minister of the Economy, announced the approvals on Thursday after the weekly FEC meeting in Abuja. The approved projects include the Lagos Green Line Rail Project Phase One, the Kano State Metro City Rail Project and the Kaduna State Light Rail Project.

The minister said the three rail projects will be sponsored by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated on behalf of the federal government with counterpart funding. Oyedele described Lagos, Kano and Kaduna as critical cities where targeted infrastructure investments can deliver significant economic returns. He added that the Lagos Green Line is designed to run from Marina on Lagos Island through the Lekki corridor to ease congestion in one of sub-Saharan Africa’s densest commercial hubs.

Oyedele said the approvals align with the federal government’s commitment to infrastructure that drives productivity, economic growth and improved quality of life. The minister noted that the Kano metro and Kaduna light rail projects target two of northern Nigeria’s most economically significant urban centres. He said all three initiatives are expected to enhance urban mobility and support commerce.

The rail projects represent a major step in the government’s urban transportation expansion across Nigeria’s key economic zones.
