Federal Government Hands Carter Bridge Project to CCECC

The Federal Government has handed over the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation CCECC as part of efforts to strengthen critical infrastructure and improve public safety.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Wednesday at Carter Bridge on Lagos Island, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said years of structural investigations revealed worsening defects beneath both Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge. He said further underwater assessments ordered by the current administration confirmed that some supporting piles had shifted from their foundations.

Umahi said the ₦545 billion project was awarded to CCECC after a competitive bidding process involving seven firms. He said the bridge, expected to take 36 months to complete, would include a cable-stayed section to improve navigation and enhance the city’s landscape. The project will be funded through a combination of Federal Government contributions and external borrowing.

The minister also announced the emergency closure of one carriageway of the Eko Bridge from Sunday, May 10, following structural damage linked to illegal sand mining activities. He said emergency repair works and underwater investigations would begin immediately to prevent further risk to motorists and residents.
