SARS No Longer Exists In Nigeria,  Lagos Police Chief Asserts

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Olohundare Jimoh, says the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, no longer exists within the Nigeria Police Force. He also dismissed claims that former SARS operatives had been regrouped into new tactical units.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, Jimoh said former SARS officers were conventional police personnel who were redeployed to other units after the squad was dissolved following the EndSARS protests. He added that officers underwent retraining programmes involving international human rights organisations, including the Red Cross.

The police chief said many videos currently circulating online showing alleged police brutality were old recordings from 5 to 6 years ago, although he acknowledged the recent shooting incident involving 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Jimoh said the Inspector-General of Police had set up a high-level committee to investigate the viral videos and determine whether any recent abuses had occurred. He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it online, warning that misinformation could undermine public trust and national security.
