Nigerian athlete Samuel Ogazi has set a new national record in the men’s 400 metres after winning the event at the Southern Conference Track and Field Championships in the United States.

The 20-year-old, who competes for the University of Alabama, won the final in 43.95 seconds in the early hours of Sunday. The time broke his own previous national record of 44.02 seconds, set just two weeks earlier, which had surpassed Emmanuel Egbunnike’s 39-year-old mark.

Ogazi’s latest performance also made him the fastest athlete in the men’s 400 metres in 2026, moving him ahead of the previous joint world leader, Jonathan Simms of the United States.
