A total of 115 Nigerian migrants stranded in the Niger Republic have been repatriated, arriving at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on Tuesday afternoon, according to Nura Abdullahi, head of operations at the National Emergency Management Agency in Kano.
Abdullahi debunked reports that the citizens were deported from Agadez, clarifying that the flights were part of voluntary repatriation exercises facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration, NEMA, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, and other government agencies.
He noted that the Niger Republic hosts an IOM camp for Africans who attempt to migrate but later become stranded, and the IOM partners with African countries to repatriate their stranded citizens. Last month, NEMA received a batch of 329 stranded Nigerians from the Niger Republic, while another 497 migrants were received by the NCFRMI and a separate 1,100 citizens were returned from the same country.
In March, 708 stranded Nigerians arrived in the country from Niamey, the Niger Republic’s capital city. The government has consistently urged citizens to avoid dangerous migration routes and has collaborated with international partners to facilitate safe returns.
