Retired military officers and associates of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar have called for comprehensive reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture following his death after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State.
The appeal was made on Thursday at a press conference in Kaduna, where Brigadier General Isma’ila Abdullahi, speaking on behalf of the group, described the incident as a stark reminder of the country’s growing security challenges and urged stronger measures to tackle banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
The group called for improved collaboration among security agencies, greater investment in intelligence gathering, tighter border control and enhanced support for community-based security structures and forest guard units.
The retired officers also expressed support for state police, provided states can demonstrate the financial and institutional capacity to recruit, train, equip and sustain such organisations, while urging governments at all levels to support victims of insecurity and strengthen efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity.
