The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and other employers to address outstanding welfare and professional concerns. The decision was announced in a communiqué after an emergency virtual meeting of its Extraordinary National Executive Council, following the expiry of an earlier ultimatum issued in May.
The association says doctors are still owed the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, outstanding 25 and 35 per cent CONMESS salary review arrears, 19 months of Professional Allowance arrears, and salary and promotion arrears in several health institutions. It is demanded that all outstanding payments be made within the next 21 days.
NARD also called on defaulting state governments and managements of state and private tertiary health institutions to implement outstanding allowances, the revised CONMESS salary structure, residency training funding and other welfare benefits. It criticised some hospitals for failing to provide call meals and raised concerns over labour issues at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
The association acknowledged progress by government committees reviewing assaults on healthcare workers, excessive workload and employment issues. However, it warned that failure to address its demands could lead to industrial unrest and urged the Federal Government to implement all outstanding agreements reached with resident doctors.
