FG Raises 2026 Independent Revenue Target To N2.5tn

The Federal Government has set an ambitious new target of N2.5 trillion in independent revenue for 2026. The figure was disclosed by the acting Executive Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Charles Abana, during a meeting in Abuja with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Abana said the target follows the commission’s tracking of roughly N1.84 trillion in independent revenue generated by government ministries, departments and agencies as of September last year.

The commission says it’s tightening the screws on revenue leakages across public institutions. Officials say they’re intensifying efforts to improve transparency in revenue reporting and ensure operating surpluses from government-owned enterprises are remitted promptly into the Consolidated Revenue Fund. As part of that push, the commission has fully automated its Operating Surplus Calculation Template — first introduced in 2016 — to bring it in line with the Finance Act of 2020 and improve accuracy in revenue computation.

Speaking at the meeting, the SGF, Senator George Akume, called for tighter collaboration among Nigeria’s fiscal oversight bodies, including the Finance Ministry, the Budget Office, the Office of the Accountant-General and the Debt Management Office, to eliminate duplication and strengthen fiscal governance. He described the Fiscal Responsibility Commission as central to the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that disciplined management of public resources remains key to macroeconomic stability, investor confidence, and debt sustainability as the government works to boost non-oil revenue.
