African Democratic Congress Presidential Aspirant Atiku Abubakar has appointed Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as spokesman for his 2027 presidential campaign. The move comes as Atiku continues to position the ADC as the main platform for an opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Okonkwo recently rejected the coalition’s choice of Rotimi Amaechi as vice-presidential candidate over what he described as continued marginalisation of the South-East, highlighting tensions inside the coalition over zoning, representation and regional balance. He had argued that the South-East has not produced either a president or vice president since 1999, and said he would not campaign for any ticket that excluded the region from the top two offices.
In accepting the appointment, Okonkwo said in an Instagram post that in discussions with party leaders and members “the interests of the South-East were discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground.”
