Nigerian Sprinter Godson Oghenebrume Jailed in US for Firearm Possession

Nigerian sprinter Godson (Brume) Oghenebrume has been sentenced to 27 months in a US federal prison and faces possible deportation over firearm possession charges. The 23-year-old was sentenced by a US federal judge after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm while on an F-1 student visa, stemming from a February 2025 domestic incident in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in which he fired a gun during an argument with his ex-girlfriend while their infant child was present, then fired more shots as she fled before discarding the weapon.

Oghenebrume, the younger brother of long jump star Ese Brume, is one of Nigeria’s fastest sprinters, with a personal best of 9.90 seconds in the 100m and a standout career at LSU that included representing Nigeria as an alternate in the 4x100m relay at the Tokyo Olympics and winning silver at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria president Tonobok Okowa said, in response to the sentencing, that the country will welcome Oghenebrume with open arms should he be deported and the sentence will not spell the end of his career.
