Electricity subsidy hits N358bn despite persistent power outages

The Federal Government spent N358.32 billion subsidising electricity in Q1 2026, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s latest report, averaging over N119 billion monthly.

This covered nearly 52% of the total N689.72 billion GenCo invoice, with NBET billing DisCos only N331.40 billion.

Though the subsidy fell 14.44% from N418.79 billion in Q4 2025, NERC clarified this wasn’t due to tariff reforms but an 8.56% drop in electricity offtake by distribution companies.

Despite the spending, supply worsened: average generation capacity fell 17.45% to 4,457.96megawatts, and total generation dropped 9.64% to 8,883.47 gigawatt-hour. The quarter also saw two grid disturbances, a total collapse on January 23 and a partial collapse on January 27.
