Association of Medical and Dental Academics threaten strike action

The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics has given the federal government 21 days to resolve unpaid allowances and salary disputes or face a nationwide indefinite strike.

NAMDA President Nosa Orhue announced the ultimatum in Abuja on Tuesday, after the union’s National Executive Council reviewed talks that have stalled since April 9. He said the association has engaged the government for over two years without meaningful progress.

At the heart of the dispute is pay parity: medical lecturers say they earn less than hospital-based consultants doing similar clinical work, despite holding the same qualifications. NAMDA insists the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure remains the only acceptable pay framework and is opposing efforts to move members over 65 onto a different salary scale, which it calls a demotion.

The union also wants special pensions for retired academics and an end to the compulsory PhD requirement for medical lecturers.

Despite the standoff, Orhue has praised the Education Minister for backing salary parity and pledged the union’s support for the government’s Ebola outbreak preparedness efforts.
