The Abia State government has denied reports claiming that Governor Alex Otti has defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress. The clarification follows social media posts showing the governor with his Enugu counterpart, Peter Mbah, shortly before Mbah’s own defection to the APC.
The reports suggested that Otti’s visit to Governor Mbah was part of a plan to ease his entry into the ruling national party. The images circulated widely, sparking speculation about a possible political realignment in the South East.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, described the claims as “a fabrication by political propagandists.” He said Governor Otti remains a committed and proud member of the Labour Party, under which he was elected by the people of Abia State.
Mr Kanu urged the public to disregard the report, calling it “cheap propaganda” intended to mislead the public and distract from the administration’s ongoing development efforts.
