Abuja and 27 States at Risk as NIHSA Forecasts Flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has issued a flood alert covering 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory, warning of possible severe flooding between 22 July and 5 August.

Director-General Umar Mohammad said the advisory follows the agency’s latest forecast, which aligns with its 2025 Annual Flood Outlook. Over 739 communities across 162 local government areas are considered at risk.

Major cities such as Lagos and Abuja are likely to be affected, with key transport corridors including the Okene–Lokoja–Abuja Road, Birnin Kebbi–Bunza Road, and Ibi–Wukari Road also identified as vulnerable. The agency warned of potential damage to homes, infrastructure, and businesses in low-lying areas.

Mr Mohammad urged emergency services and state governments to activate response plans and called on residents in high-risk zones to prepare for possible evacuation. He also warned that farmlands could be submerged, which may disrupt food production and worsen food security. The agency advised the public follow updates via NIHSA’s flood dashboard at www.nihsa.gov.ng and its social media platforms.
