The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called on the Federal Government to clarify the contents of the health cooperation memorandum of understanding recently signed between Nigeria and the United States, citing concerns over conflicting descriptions of the agreement.
In a statement, the ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party was disturbed by differences between the Nigerian government’s portrayal of the MoU and official statements from the United States, which described support for Christian faith based healthcare providers.
The five year agreement, signed in December, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s health system, covering services such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, and polio, with the United States committing nearly 2.1 billion dollars, while Nigeria is expected to increase domestic health spending by almost three billion dollars.

Mr Abdullahi warned that any identity based framing of public health funding could breach constitutional provisions on non discrimination and national unity, and urged the government to state which version of the agreement reflects the actual terms signed and why the differences exist.
