ADC to Allow Open Contest for 2027 Ticket, says Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says no aspirant will withdraw from the African Democratic Congress presidential race ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Mr Abubakar said all qualified aspirants would be free to present themselves when the party begins its selection process.

He was responding to reports that he was under pressure to step aside for a southern aspirant to emerge as the party’s flagbearer. Mr Abubakar accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to intimidate and destabilise the opposition, saying opposition leaders had rallied around the ADC to build a credible national alternative.

Mr Abubakar said the ADC remains committed to an open, transparent and competitive process, stressing that inclusiveness was central to democracy. He added that no amount of intimidation or interference would derail the party’s plans, as Nigerians are suffering under current economic conditions and a shrinking democratic space.
