The founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, has dropped all criminal charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi. The move comes after the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, along with other prominent traditional rulers in the country.
Babalola made the announcement on Sunday, stating that he was compelled to follow the guidance of the traditional institutions, whose authority he respects. He emphasised that, in Yoruba tradition, the words of an Oba are to be followed as a command.

The charges had stemmed from Farotimi’s publication of a book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Babalola of corruption within the judiciary. The Ooni of Ife had earlier appealed to Babalola to consider the influence of various personalities and forces involved in the matter.
In his statement, the Ooni praised Babalola for his ongoing contributions to the development of the Yoruba people, Nigeria, and the global community.
