The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called for the unconditional release of activist Dele Farotimi, currently detained over alleged defamation charges filed by Afe Babalola SAN.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, condemned the procedure surrounding Farotimi’s arrest by plain-clothed police officers from Ekiti State. He described the charges as bailable and criticised the Chief Magistrate Court in Ekiti for delaying a decision on his bail application until December 20.

Mr. Farotimi, a member of Afenifere’s National Caucus, was arrested on December 3 at his office in Lekki, Lagos, following a petition from Mr. Babalola, who alleged defamation in Farotimi’s book titled ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’.
Afenifere maintained that the activist should have been granted bail on self-recognisance, urging the judiciary to uphold fairness and the rule of law.
