African Journalists Condemn Israel’s Targeting of Media, Say Journalism Is Not a Crime

Journalists across Africa, under a group known as African Journalists Against Genocide, AJAG, have condemned the killing of colleagues in Gaza, accusing Israel of deliberately targeting the press.

From South Africa to Nigeria, Ethiopia, Gambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, reporters, who spoke in unison in a video, described the deaths of more than 200 journalists as a crime against humanity. They held that journalism was being punished simply for documenting war, and that silencing the media was a deliberate strategy to conceal atrocities.

Their voices likened Israel’s actions to apartheid, urging the international community to apply sanctions and treat the country as it once did South Africa. Others demanded accountability for what they called war crimes.

AJAG, created by Ireti Bakare-Yusuf, who has covered the Israel/Gaza conflict, while stressing that journalism is the lifeblood of truth, also insisted that ‘Journalism is not a crime – killing journalists is.’
