The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has directed Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to suspend the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025. His directive follows a Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which on February 10 nullified a Federal High Court judgement from November 2022 that had sacked APC local government chairmen. According to the AGF, the appellate court’s decision effectively restores the APC officials to office.
Tensions have escalated in Osun following the court ruling, with at least six people confirmed dead since Monday after violent clashes erupted between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition APC. The conflict stems from a struggle over control of the local government councils, as PDP members resist the return of sacked APC chairmen.

Ahead of the violence, Governor Adeleke had raised concerns on Sunday, warning that APC members, allegedly backed by security agencies, were planning to forcefully take over council secretariats. He also urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, whom he accused of orchestrating the crisis.
