Air Peace Pilots Tested Positive for Alcohol After Port Harcourt Incident says NSIB

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau says two Air Peace pilots tested positive for alcohol after their aircraft veered off the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport in July. A cabin crew member also tested positive for cannabis.

The incident happened on 13 July when the aircraft, flying from Lagos, touched down long on Runway 21 and came to a halt 209 metres into the clearway. The jet, carrying 103 passengers and crew, landed 2,264 metres from the threshold but all on board disembarked safely without injury.

In its preliminary report, the bureau described the landing as an “unstabilised final approach”. Toxicology tests on the captain and first officer confirmed recent alcohol consumption, while a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.

The NSIB has issued safety recommendations to Air Peace, including stronger training for pilots on handling unstable approaches and go-around procedures, as well as stricter checks on crew fitness before flights.
