AIT Shutdown Constitutes Violation Of Media Freedom And Legal Processes By Rivers State Government

ActionAid Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has condemned the shutdown of Africa Independent Television, AIT, and Raypower FM in Port Harcourt by the Rivers State Government.

In a statement signed by its Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, the NGO described the actions of the State Government as unlawful.

Mr. Mamedu, says the move is a blatant violation of media freedom and a violation of legal processes.

He accused the Rivers State Government of breaching media rights and jeopardising the livelihoods of countless individuals.

Government contractors accompanied by security agents moved to demolish the premises of the media houses around 10am on Sunday, despite an ongoing legal dispute over land between the state government and DAAR Communications PLC – owners of AIT and Raypower.
