Al-Shabab gunmen lay siege to Somali hotel

Al-Shabab gunmen have attacked a hotel in central Somalia, where government officials and tribal elders were meeting to discuss efforts against the militant group.

The attackers detonated a car bomb before storming the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne, triggering a gunfight with Somali security forces. Witnesses reported multiple explosions and gunfire, with part of the hotel reduced to rubble.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it killed more than 10 people, though casualty figures vary. A federal lawmaker reported at least four deaths, while other sources say six people, including two prominent elders, were killed.

Al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, has waged a 16-year insurgency against Somalia’s government, targeting officials, military personnel, and civilians despite ongoing security efforts.
