ALTON Calls for Urgent Tariff Review to Save Nigeria’s Telecom Industry

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has raised concerns over the survival of the telecom industry, warning of potential service shedding if tariffs are not urgently reviewed. ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, highlighted the rising operational costs, stagnant tariffs, and worsening economic conditions as critical challenges during a statement on Monday.

Adebayo identified soaring energy prices, inflation, and fluctuating exchange rates as major factors impacting the industry. He warned that without immediate tariff reforms, operators may be forced to reduce or suspend services in some areas, potentially disconnecting millions of Nigerians.

The ALTON chairman emphasised the broader implications of service disruptions, noting that sectors such as security, commerce, healthcare, and education, which heavily depend on telecom infrastructure, would face significant challenges. He called for urgent measures to address the industry’s longstanding issues, which have worsened over the past year.

Adebayo stressed that safeguarding the telecommunications sector is essential to avoid severe economic fallout and maintain national stability.
