American Senate Leader Urges New Israeli Elections, Calls Netanyahu Obstacle To Peace

The US Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, has called for Israel to hold new elections, saying he believed the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had “lost his way” and risked turning the country into a pariah with its bombardment of Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis it caused.

Senator Schumer, who is the Democratic leader of Congress’s upper chamber and the highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States, is also pressing for lawmakers to approve a military assistance package for Israel as well as Ukraine, two countries President Joe Biden has named as two of America’s top national security priorities.

Noting the prime minister’s inclusion of far-right officials in his government, Senator Schumer said Prime Minister Netanyahu has, in his own words, been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which, he says, is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. He added that Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah.
