Amnesty International Applauds Nigerian Government for Blocking Shell’s Onshore Asset Sale

Amnesty International has commended the Nigerian Government for blocking the planned sale of Shell’s onshore oil assets. The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), recently rejected the $1.3 billion sale of Shell’s onshore oilfields to Renaissance Group, citing the buyer’s lack of qualifications.

At a press conference in Port Harcourt, Mark Dumett, Head of Business and Human Rights at Amnesty International, emphasized that any multinational oil company divesting from the Niger Delta must first address human rights abuses linked to oil spills that have devastated the region’s environment.

Mr. Dumett called for accountability from Shell and other companies before any divestment, stressing the importance of addressing the environmental damage caused over decades.

Amnesty’s statement comes as discussions continue over the future of oil exploration in the Niger Delta amidst ongoing concerns about corporate responsibility and environmental justice.
