Amnesty International has condemned recent attacks in Niger, Plateau and Kaduna states, describing them as evidence of the Nigerian authorities’ failure to protect lives. The organisation said the incidents highlight the growing insecurity facing rural communities in northern Nigeria.
In Niger State, over 30 people were killed on Saturday when gunmen attacked a market at Kasuwan Daji Kabe District in Borgu Local Government Area. Amnesty International said the attackers, believed to be bandits operating from the Kainji Lake National Park, also abducted an unspecified number of people, burned the market and looted food and other items.
In Kaduna State, four members of the same family were killed in an attack on Sabon Kaura community in Kachia Local Government Area. A day earlier in Plateau State, seven people were killed in Bong Village, Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area, where gunmen carried out what Amnesty described as a house-to-house search and kill operation.

Amnesty International said thousands of people have been killed in northern Nigeria since 2020, warning that many villagers feel abandoned by the government. The organisation said the rising death toll raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures, despite repeated assurances and directives by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to end the violence.
