The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, has appealed to voters in Anambra State to turn out in large numbers for Saturday’s governorship election. Addressing journalists in Abuja, he described voter apathy—not violence—as the biggest threat to Anambra’s democracy.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, highlighted a troubling decline in turnout: 25.5 per cent in 2013, 20.1 percent in 2017, and just 10.27 percent in 2021. He said the Commission remains committed to delivering a credible, transparent, and inclusive election.

INEC reported that 98.8 percent of Permanent Voter Cards have been collected, following an extended registration period. Sixteen candidates are contesting across 21 local councils, with over 45,000 police officers deployed to ensure peace and order during the vote.
