Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has directed the closure of schools in Nnewi for a week due to security concerns surrounding the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. The senator, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District, passed away in July at age 52, with his burial scheduled for Friday in his hometown, Umuanuka village, Otolo Nnewi.
The decision follows threats by non-state actors to disrupt the burial and unresolved tensions in the area. These fears were heightened after gunmen attacked Nnewi on Wednesday night, killing several people and setting a vehicle ablaze.

In a circular issued Thursday, the state government instructed all principals to close schools in the Nnewi zone until Tuesday and advised parents of day students to keep their children at home for safety.
