The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, regarding the state of Nigeria’s economy. Obi, during his New Year press conference, expressed concern over the worsening political, economic, and security situations in the country, asserting that Nigeria’s challenges were growing despite government assertions of improvement.
Obi specifically criticised the country’s security, describing Nigeria as one of the least peaceful nations globally, with millions of people displaced and living in IDP camps. He cited the Global Peace Index, which ranks Nigeria 143rd out of 163 countries, as a stark indicator of the ongoing crisis.

He also raised alarms about food insecurity, calling it the country’s “new national norm,” and highlighted Nigeria’s position among the hungriest nations in the world. His statements painted a grim picture of the nation’s future, with little sign of improvement.
In response, the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, rejected Obi’s view. The ruling party described his remarks as misleading and politically motivated, arguing that all indicators show Nigeria is experiencing significant recovery across various sectors. The APC further labelled Obi as Nigeria’s “leading doomsayer” for spreading what they called negative narratives.
