Appeal Court Reserves Judgment on IPOB’s Terrorism Proscription Appeal

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reserved judgement on an appeal filed by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is challenging its designation as a terrorist organisation by the Federal Government in a 2017 ruling by late Chief Judge Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, that declared the group’s activities illegal in Nigeria.

A three-judge panel, led by Justice Hamma Barka, adjourned the case after hearing final arguments from both parties. IPOB’s lawyer, Senior Advocate Chukwuma-Machukwu Umeh, argued that the organisation was denied a fair hearing and urged the court to allow the appeal, while government counsel Oyilade Koleosho refuted this claim and requested the court to dismiss the appeal.

Following arguments from both sides, the Appeal Court panel announced it would communicate the date for the judgement to all involved parties.
