Appeal Court Upholds Aiyedatiwa’s Election as Ondo Governor

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld the election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress. Aiyedatiwa was declared winner of the 16 November 2024 governorship poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission after polling 366,781 votes and winning in all 18 local government areas.

His closest challenger, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party, had filed a petition alleging widespread irregularities. The appeal court’s decision reinforces earlier rulings that dismissed those claims.

On 4 June 2025, the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, chaired by Justice Benson Ogubu, struck out petitions from Ajayi and other opposition parties, including the SDP, ADC, APM and AA, affirming Aiyedatiwa’s mandate.

In a separate ruling on 11 March, the Supreme Court had dismissed an appeal by Ajayi challenging Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy, ruling that he lacked the legal standing to interfere in the APC’s internal affairs.
