Appeal Court Upholds Death Sentence of Hanifa Abubakar’s Killer

The Court of Appeal sitting in Kano has upheld the death sentence imposed on Abdulmalik Tanko for the murder of five-year-old Hanifa Abubakar. The court dismissed Tanko’s appeal and affirmed the judgement of the Kano State High Court, which sentenced him to death by hanging.

Delivering the ruling, Justice A. R. Muhammad held that the trial court acted properly in law and in its evaluation of the evidence before it. He described the prosecution’s case as compelling and convincing, saying the arguments raised by the appellant lacked merit.

Justice Muhammad said the appellate court found no reason to interfere with the decision of the lower court and urged the appropriate authorities to ensure the judgement is carried out after all legally available avenues of appeal have been exhausted.
