The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says Nigeria and Argentina faced similar economic crises but only Argentina has begun a recovery. In a post on X, Obi blamed Nigeria’s deepening poverty and hunger on what he called “incompetent leadership without capacity or compassion.”
Obi cited UN figures showing about 34 million Nigerians facing acute food insecurity and 133 million living in multidimensional poverty. He said inflation is close to 30 per cent, while unemployment and mismanagement have eroded the middle class, forcing once-stable families into hardship.

He pointed to Argentina’s reforms under its current president, who took office the same year as Nigeria’s government. According to Obi, decisive action to cut waste and prioritise stability reduced the poverty rate from 52 to 38.1 percent in two years, with inflation now at 2–3 percent monthly and investor confidence returning.
Obi said Nigeria could achieve similar progress through disciplined leadership, prudent governance, and investment in education, healthcare, and poverty reduction. He added that while two years may not be enough for a complete turnaround, it is sufficient to start a transformation that delivers visible improvements for citizens.
