Army Officer, Soldiers Killed as Troops Repel ISWAP Attacks in Borno

A Nigerian Army major and other soldiers have been killed as troops repelled coordinated attacks by ISWAP terrorists on military formations in Borno State. The attacks took place between late February 28 and early March 1 in Mayanti, Gajigana and Gajiram.

The Army says troops of Operation Hadin Kai foiled the assaults and inflicted heavy losses on the insurgents. Several terrorists were confirmed killed, while weapons and ammunition were recovered. The Army also confirmed that one officer paid the supreme price during the fighting in Mayanti, while another soldier was wounded and airlifted for treatment.

ISWAP, in a propaganda message, claimed responsibility for the attacks and alleged that soldiers and military equipment were destroyed. A video seen by reporters showed injured personnel being evacuated by helicopter to Maiduguri for medical attention.

The Army says the attacks reflect increasing pressure on terrorist enclaves due to sustained operations in the North East.
