Arteta Backs Merino for Forward Role

Arteta Backs Merino for Forward Role

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says midfielder Mikel Merino has earned the right to be considered for a striking role, even when all the club’s forwards return to full fitness.
Merino, signed from Real Sociedad in August 2024, had never played as a number nine before joining Arsenal but impressed last season, scoring nine goals while covering for injured forwards.

The 29-year-old has continued his strong form, netting 11 goals for club and country this season and helping Arsenal stay top of the Premier League. Arteta told reporters the Spaniard’s performances justify keeping him in contention for an attacking role.

Arteta added that Merino could also feature across the forward line alongside Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres or Gabriel Jesus, depending on tactical needs.

He confirmed the club is monitoring the fitness of Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and William Saliba ahead of Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.
