ASUU Declares Two-Week Warning Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike beginning on October 13, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour longstanding agreements. ASUU President, Dr Chris Piwuna, announced the decision in Abuja after what he described as repeated but fruitless engagements with government officials.

He said the action became inevitable following the government’s inaction on issues affecting public universities, including welfare, funding, and autonomy. The announcement came despite recent appeals from the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who claimed negotiations were nearing conclusion.

In a swift reaction, the Federal Ministry of Education warned the union that the “no work, no pay” policy would be enforced. Ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo said the government had shown commitment to resolving the disputes, accusing ASUU of disregarding ongoing dialogue aimed at preventing further disruption to academic activities nationwide.
