At least 19 people have been killed and dozens injured in Nepal after protests against a government ban on social media platforms and corruption turned violent. Police clashed with demonstrators near the parliament building in Kathmandu, where thousands had gathered following calls by a group describing themselves as Generation Z.
Nepal’s Minister for Communication, Prithvi Subba said police used water cannons, batons and rubber bullets after protesters attempted to breach restricted areas. Kathmandu police confirmed 17 deaths in the capital, while two others were killed in the eastern city of Itahari.

Authorities said the ban on platforms including Facebook, X and YouTube was necessary to combat fake news, hate speech and online fraud. But many demonstrators accused the government of trying to silence dissent, with some saying corruption and poor governance were the real reasons behind the unrest.
Officials have imposed a curfew around parliament, while security forces continue patrols in affected areas. Hospitals reported difficulties treating the injured, with doctors at one facility saying tear gas entered the building during the clashes.
