At least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard have been killed in violence following the death of alleged drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho. He died in custody on Sunday after being captured in Jalisco state.
The unrest has spread to at least 20 states, with cartel members blocking roads and setting vehicles and buildings on fire. Residents in several towns were told to stay indoors as security forces responded.
Mexico has deployed 2,500 soldiers to the west of the country. Officials say El Mencho was injured in a firefight during his capture and died while being transported to Mexico City.
