At least 40 feared dead in Sokoto boat accident

At least 40 traders, including women, are feared dead after a boat capsized on Sunday in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The passengers were heading to the weekly Goronyo market when the vessel, which was also carrying motorcycles and goods, overturned around 1.30pm.

The Chairman of Goronyo LGA, Hon. Zubairu Yari, confirmed that four people were rescued, but said the boat was overloaded and lacked a passenger manifest. He added that rescue efforts were being hampered by heavy water discharge from the Goronyo Dam, and appealed for community support in recovering victims’ bodies.

The lawmaker representing Gada-Goronyo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bashir Usman Gorau, has called on the Sokoto Rima River Basin Authority to temporarily suspend the release of water from the dam to aid recovery operations. He said halting the discharge, even briefly, would make rescue efforts safer and more effective.
