Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Senate’s approach to transmitting election results. He spoke in Minna after a meeting with former head of state Ibrahim Babangida, saying the Senate’s decision could confuse the electoral process if real-time transmission is not fully adopted.
Atiku faulted lawmakers for approving electronic transmission of results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s result-viewing portal with a manual collation fallback. According to him, this mixed approach may undermine transparency rather than enhance it.
The Senate had earlier amended the Electoral Act but rejected a proposal for full real-time transmission, prompting protests and calls from some political figures for lawmakers to reconsider. A reconsideration was eventually made with a provision to fall back on manual methods where technology fails.

Atiku urged opposition parties to unite in pushing for a system that delivers results electronically in real time, saying a single-tier system would better serve Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
