Ayra Starr Makes History with Double Win at 2025 MOBO Awards

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has won two prestigious awards at the 2025 MOBO Awards, held on Wednesday in Newcastle, United Kingdom. The event, which celebrates achievements in “music of black origin,” saw Starr claim ‘Best International Act’—making her the first African female to win the prize—and ‘Best African Music Act,’ a category no female artist has won in 16 years.  

Other notable winners include Nigerian-British rapper Darkoo, who won ‘Best Female Act,’ and Central Cee, who took home the award for ‘Best Male Act.’ The three-man podcast 90sbabyshow won ‘Best Media Personality,’ while Nigerian-born singer Odeal was named ‘Best Newcomer.’

Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr rose to fame in 2021 with her hit song ‘Bloody Samaritan’. Signed under Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, she has gained widespread recognition for her music and performance style.  

Her latest MOBO wins add to her growing list of accolades, cementing her status as one of Africa’s most influential artists.
