Bandits who attacked the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday, have demanded ₦100 million as ransom for each of the abducted worshippers. At least 30 people were taken during the evening service, and three worshippers were reportedly killed in the attack. Community leaders say the kidnappers have begun calling families using the phones of victims.
Chief Olusegun Olukotun, the Olori Eta of Eruku, confirmed that four of his relatives were among those taken. He said the abductors had separated victims into groups based on family ties and had contacted several relatives with ransom demands. The church pastor, Abiodun Bamidele, told journalists that between 30 and 35 members were kidnapped while a thanksgiving service for previously rescued victims was underway.
The incident triggered protests by youths in the community, who blocked the Ilorin to Kabba highway to express anger over what they described as a lack of response from security operatives. Youth leader Peter Adesiyan criticised the police, saying officers failed to act despite the community’s support in building facilities for the local division.
